Julie de Azevedo Hanks, PhD, LCSW is a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist specializing in women’s emotional health and relationships. Dr. Hanks is the founder and director of Wasatch Family Therapy, author of The Burnout Cure and The Assertiveness Guide for Women, a blogger, a local and national media contributor, an online influencer, a consultant, and an award-winning performing songwriter.  A native Californian, Hanks currently lives in Salt Lake City, UT with her husband and their 4 children. Short Bio

Julie de Azevedo Hanks, PhD, MSW, LCSW is a self-care evangelist, author, relationship expert, media contributor, blogger, speaker, songwriter licensed therapist with over 20 year experience counseling women, couples and families. In addition to owning Wasatch Family Therapy, LLC and serving as executive director, Dr. Hanks is an emotional health and relationship expert and top online mental health influencer with an extensive and engaged social media following. As sought after media personality Dr. Hanks’ advice has been interviewed for The Wall Street Journal, Cosmopolitan, Women’s Day, Parenting, Reader’s Digest, Redbook, and numerous other publications, and has appeared on-camera on Fox News, Fox Business News, KSL TV’s Studio 5, Discovery Health, TLC, and Reelz Channel.

After speaking to large women’s groups of Latter-day Saint women on preventing emotional burnout for a decade and working with hundreds of women in her clinical practice who were overwhelmed and felt “never good enough”, Dr. Hanks felt compelled to write her first book The Burnout Cure: An Emotional Survival Guide for Overwhelmed Women.

As an award-winning performing songwriter, “Julie de Azevedo” has written dozens of songs, contributed to numerous projects, and produced 10 solo CD’s over the past 25 years. Her most recent CD “Masterpiece: The Best of Julie de Azevedo” is a collection of her best-loved songs.

Dr. Hanks’ most valuable experience has been “in the trenches” of family life as a wife to Jeff Hanks and mother of 4 children. She enjoys sunshine, taking long naps, social media, reading, writing, eating a lot of chocolate, and playing roller derby.

Long Bio

Born and raised in Los Angeles, the heart of the entertainment industry, Julie de Azevedo Hanks, PhD, LCSW is no stranger to the limelight. In elementary school she sang with the The King Family during early elementary school with her grandmother Alyce King, of the King Sisters.

As a wife, mother, licensed therapist, author of The Burnout Cure: An Emotional Survival Guide For Overwhelmed Women (Covenant, Aug. 1, 2013), and The Assertiveness Guide for Women: How to Communicate Your Needs, Set Healthy Boundaries, and Transform Your Relationships (New Harbinger, Aug. 1, 2016) business owner, private practice consultant, award-winning singer-songwriter, media contributor, mental health blogger, and speaker, Dr. Hanks understands the juggling act women face these days. She also knows what women want and need in order to keep balance caring for her own needs and the needs of her loved ones.

During her freshman year of college over 25 years ago, Julie began her own music career with the release of her first solo album. Within a few years she married and then became a mother.  While her first priority has always been that of being a wife and mother, Julie is also driven by her passion for music and therapy, and has learned the tight-wire balance necessary to raise a healthy family while simultaneously pursuing her own goals. She has gone on to have three more children, release nine more albums, receive her master’s degree (University of Utah) and her PhD (University of Louisiana at Monroe) in marriage and family therapy, and open a thriving counseling practice Wasatch Family Therapy with 3 locations in Salt Lake City, Bountiful, and Orem, Utah.

My motivation for doing what I do is to be helpful. It sounds so simple, but it’s the truth.  In everything I do I want to connect with people, infuse hope, and to make a difference for good.

Whether you are in the audience at one of her workshops, watching her regular segments on Utah’s popular morning show Studio 5, reading her blogs and articles, or sitting in her cozy office for an individual, couple or family therapy session, it is impossible to not be inspired by Julie’s unique perspective and expert knowledge. Her education and experience have situated her as an authority on the wide gamut of issues women face today including mental health, relationships, self-care, sexual intimacy, childhood abuse, stress, burnout, depression, body image, and eating disorders.

Though I started my therapy career specializing in child therapy, I quickly realized that one of the best ways to help children was to help mothers and marriages.  Much of what I talk about at speaking engagements, write about in my songs, and provide as services in my therapy practice are focused on helping women make the most of their lives so they have more to offer their marriages and families.

Dr. Hanks is a sought after emotional health and relationship expert on TV and radio. She is a regular contributor on KSL TV’s Studio 5, a celebrity commentator on Reelz Channel’s new show Celebrity Legacies, and has appeared nationally on TLC, Discovery Health, FOX News Channel.  Her down-to-earth advice has also been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Cosmopolitan, CNN, Women’s Day, Women’s Health, Real Simple, Parenting, and others.
